What is Ambien?
Ambien is a sedative-hypnotic medication used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep). Its generic name is zolpidem. Ambien works by affecting chemicals in the brain that regulate sleep, helping you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
-
Immediate-release Ambien: Helps you fall asleep quickly.
-
Extended-release Ambien CR: Has two layers; the first helps you fall asleep, and the second dissolves slowly to help you stay asleep.
Ambien is commonly prescribed for adults and is not recommended for children under 18.
