What is Fioricet?
Fioricet is a combination medication used to treat tension headaches (and sometimes migraines). It contains:
-
Butalbital – a barbiturate that helps relax muscle contractions involved in tension headaches.
-
Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) – a non-opioid pain reliever that reduces headache pain and lowers fever.
-
Caffeine – a stimulant that improves blood flow in the brain and enhances the pain-relieving effect of acetaminophen.
This mix makes Fioricet effective for short-term relief of headache pain, especially when other treatments are not effective.
Important Information
-
Fioricet can be habit-forming if taken regularly or in high doses.
-
Overuse can lead to medication-overuse headaches (rebound headaches).
-
High doses of acetaminophen may cause severe liver damage.
-
Fioricet is not recommended for long-term use.
