What is Fioricet?

Fioricet is a combination medication used to treat tension headaches (and sometimes migraines). It contains:

  • Butalbital – a barbiturate that helps relax muscle contractions involved in tension headaches.

  • Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) – a non-opioid pain reliever that reduces headache pain and lowers fever.

  • Caffeine – a stimulant that improves blood flow in the brain and enhances the pain-relieving effect of acetaminophen.

This mix makes Fioricet effective for short-term relief of headache pain, especially when other treatments are not effective.

Important Information

  • Fioricet can be habit-forming if taken regularly or in high doses.

  • Overuse can lead to medication-overuse headaches (rebound headaches).

  • High doses of acetaminophen may cause severe liver damage.

  • Fioricet is not recommended for long-term use.

What to Know Before Taking Fioricet

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • Liver disease (especially hepatitis or cirrhosis)

  • Kidney disease

  • Breathing disorders (asthma, COPD)

  • Drug or alcohol addiction

  • Porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder)

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (Butalbital may harm the baby)

How to Take Fioricet

  • Take exactly as prescribed, usually 1–2 capsules or tablets every 4 hours as needed.

  • Do not exceed 6 tablets/capsules in 24 hours (risk of liver damage & dependency).

  • Avoid taking it for more than a few days unless directed by your doctor.

  • Never share Fioricet with others.

  • If you notice increased use or dependence, contact your doctor.

What to Avoid While Using Fioricet

  • Alcohol – increases risk of liver damage and drowsiness.

  • Driving or operating heavy machinery – Fioricet can cause drowsiness, dizziness, or slowed reactions.

  • Taking other medicines containing acetaminophen (Tylenol, APAP) without checking with your doctor – risk of overdose.
